The Climb

Ski it in winter, summit it in summer

Apharwat is the mountain that defines Gulmarg's skyline — and the slope our skiers ride all winter. In summer its snow-streaked ridges make a superb short summit: ride the Gondola high, then earn the final airy ridgeline on foot.

Includes a night at an alpine camp for acclimatisation, a dawn summit for the clearest views, and a summit certificate to prove you stood on top of it.

Fitness & Preparation

Is the Mount Apharwat Summit right for you?

This is a challenging (short) trek. No technical climbing is needed, but it's a steep, high-altitude push to 4,390 m in a short window. Solid fitness and a good head for altitude matter more here than distance.

Start preparing three to four weeks out: brisk walks or jogs, stair climbing and a few hikes with a loaded daypack build the stamina that turns a hard day into a happy one. Our guides set a steady, sustainable pace and never leave anyone behind.

Mount Apharwat Summit weather and light

Weather & Best Season

When to go, and what to expect

The summit window is June to October, once the snow has consolidated or cleared. Mornings are the safest and clearest — we start pre-dawn for the summit to beat afternoon cloud build-up.

Temperatures swing sharply with altitude: warm in the Gulmarg meadow, near freezing with wind at the summit ridge. Windproof layers are essential even on sunny days.

Pack Smart

What to pack

Ponies carry the group kit — you carry a daypack with the essentials. Here's the short list.

  • Sturdy trekking/mountaineering shoes
  • 20–30 L summit daypack
  • Windproof shell top & bottom
  • Glacier sunglasses & sunscreen

In your kit bag

  • Warm insulated jacket & gloves
  • Fleece + thermal base layers
  • Headlamp for the pre-dawn start
  • Water, snacks, personal meds
